Brian Morningside

Brian walked away from the nightwalkers with a grin on his face and the beauty of Betty etched in his mind. For so long he heard rumours about daywalkers and nightwalkers. Two different species with opposing strengths and weaknessess. They had battled each other throughout centuries and finally came to co-exist until now. Somewhere along the line someone broke the rules and a daywalker had children with a nightwalker. The end result is a montage of power and weakness buried in the young generation of day and night walkers. Brian was pleased to know that he was truly a nightwalker. He had their powers and could stand against him.

Brian felt his heart swell with pride and sadness. It seemed that miss Betty was a daywalker or possibly half. He had seen some daywalkers who could stand the blaze of the sun and yet are able to control the minds of others and hears noises that are not audible to most. Brian noticed the change when he was about six years old. He was out in the sun playing with his friends as he always did when the sun began to burn his skin. He ran into the house practically on fire screaming to his parents. They quickly doused him in water and called the doctor. They said he was allergic to sun. His parents kept him in the dark after that. Brian always knew that they secretly feared him because they thought he was a nightwalker.

It was when Brian turned sixteen that the truth came out.

"Son we need to talk. You're mother and I feel it's time for you to leave this house and go find out who you really are. We know that we are both daywalkers and it's hard to raise a son who might be a nightwalker. We aren't even sure if you're our son at all. There could've been a mix up at the hospital. Either way you should be on your way now son."

Brian just stared right through his father as a tear streamed down his face. Brian turned gathered his things and left. On his travels he came across and abandoned building where he ran into other daywalkers that had nightwalker powers. They had been trying for sometime to get answers from the nightwalkers but with little success. Most of the daywalkers were scared because their powers were not as strong as an elder nightwalker and they were always turned away with no answers. Brian decided to take the lead and head into nightwalker territory to test his strength and he was successful.

"Hey so how'd the meeting go with the nightwalkers?"

"Hmph. They tried to turn me away but it seems that their powers are not as strong as mine." Brian said letting out a little chuckle.

"Dude, you must be a pure nightwalker then."

"That's where you're wrong Michael. I am The Nightwalker and no one will be able to stop me. We shall have our time. You guys won't have to hide anymore. It's time to shake things up a bit."

TO BE CONTINUED:

POSTED 8/05/2008

Betty Darkstride

Betty laid back on her towel and closed her eyes. She thought about being a daywalker and how great it would be to see a sunrise and feel the warmth of the sun on her cold pale skin. She would run from the darkness and into the warm embrace of her true family.

"If you wanna prove you're a daywalker go into the ocean." A thought invaded Betty's head. Her eyes snapped open and she sat up. The beach was empty. Her heart pounded in her chest as blood rushed to her ears. She hadn't heard inner voices in so long she forgot just how scary they can be.

"Who are you? Most importantly, where are you?" Betty answered in her head.

"Who and where are not important. You have desires to be a daywalker and thoughts that you might actually be a daywalker then head into the ocean. Everyone knows nightwalkers can't swim." Betty nodded and rose to make her slow decent into the ocean.

"Yes test yourself. Imagine being able to walk in the warm sand and not the cold mush beneath your feet. Picture the sun beating down on your skin warming you all over. The key lies within that ocean."

Betty became hypnotized by the voice and listened to it all the way down the dune. She didn't hear her family calling her name. Didn't see their faces panic as they tried to run toward her. Betty watched the waves crash to shore and stop short just before her feet.

"Just one toe should be enough." Betty thought.

"Our kind can't swim at all so we never go in the ocean. We just love to marvel at it's beauty." Her parents words echoed in her head.

"Become a daywalker. Step forward!" The voice commanded. Betty nodded and raised her foot slightly above the water. She ignored the cries of those around her and brought her foot down. Her toe touched the water slightly before she was yanked aside by someone and tackled to the sand.

Betty shook her head and opened her eyes. She looked into the blue eyes of the most beautiful creature she had ever seen. His eyes twinkled through his mane of dark hair. She wanted to caress the soft dark bangs that fell so long in front of his face. He looked at Betty and smiled.

"You should be more careful gorgeous. I may not be around to save you next time." He smiled. "Name's Brad." He helped her to her feet.

"I'm Betty." She said smiling and adjusting her hair and bikini. The elders and her parents broke the two of the up.

"I appreciate you saving my daughter's life daywalker but you have to leave now." Betty's father said pulling his daughter close. Brad just smiled and turned around to walk away.

"You know you daywalkers should be inside right now. There are too many of you venturing out at night." One of the elders chimed in. Brian turned around and smiled at them.

"Did you ever stop to think that some of us daywalkers can't walk around in the day. That are skin blisters in the sun. Or did you ever consider the fact that some of you may not be nightwalkers. Your vision isn't as sharp, you can't hear other's thoughts willingly and..." Brian stopped as his eyes grew wide.

"Some of us may have minor imperfections young man but that does not make us daywalkers. You are far from home and should return." One of the elders said his eyes glowing red. Brian turned slowly around and started to walk away.

"You're right." Brian said turning around. "I should go home and though you tried so hard to make me, it did not happen, did it. I'm a daywalker with powers like you guys. However I see now that they are way stronger than an elders. On that lovely note I shall leave you nightwalkers to yourselves. Have a pleasant evening. Try to stay away from the water gorgeous, it would be a pity to lose such a beauty so early in life." Brian said and winked at Betty before turning around and walking away.

TO BE CONTINUED:

Posted 7/25/2008

Piece by piece I put the picture together,

Paying close attention to minor details.

From the redness of the smallest feather,

To the material of the boat's sails.

Yes the mesh of colors forms a photograph,

A beautiful picture of some kind.

There are always those who laugh,

At the rare beauty I seem to find.

A letter here a letter there,

Put them together to form a word.

Add more words to form a sentence dear,

Yet your voice still goes unheard.

Give me a riddle and I'll solve it,

All I need is a small clue.

How many snakes are in that tarpit?

Easy there is only one and that's you.

Betty Darkstride

Betty's parents did not say a word to eachother as they headed out onto the beach. Betty hummed to herself as they walked along the cool sand with the moon bright in the sky.

"You know your parents have very loud mind arguements." Trish whispered to Betty.

"Funny I thought they stopped that a long time ago. I haven't heard them since I was a baby."

"Maybe it's like my sight. I used to be able to see very well up until a year ago. Now everything is blurry. I have to rely on my senses just to see though I can see better in this moonlight."

"Who do you think those guys were at the bottom of the hill?" Betty asked as they walked pass her parents to set down their towels and play.

"Daywalkers. That's what the elders call them." Trish whispered.

"Well that's an odd name for people. My parents never mentioned them." Betty said.

"You are too young to speak of such things. Those are concerns of the elders." Mrs. Teether boomed behind the girls. They jumped and turned around. "You miss Trish need to stop listening in on people's inner conversations, it's rude. As for you miss Darkstride, you're too curious for your own good." Mrs. Teether walked off heading further down the beach. Betty shrugged and set down her stuff to play in the sand.

"So tell me what you know of the daywalkers." Betty said as she poured sand into her bucket.

"Well you know how we spend our lives in the dark, these people spend their days in the bright. They run opposite of us."

"So we go in by bright, they should go in by dark. Then why were those guys out by dark? Doesn't the moonlight affect them the way bright would affect us or how we are told it would affect us."

"I don't know but something's not right. I've been seeing a lot of strange things going on lately."

"Like what?"

"Think about it. Some of us have next to none of the attributes a darkling is supposed to have. John can't eat meat, cause it makes him deathly ill, you lost the voices in your head, Tina can't change her eye color anymore, Steven can't take hold of his brother James with eye control and I've lost my sharp sight. Now we have daywalkers coming into our part of town. I don't like it."

Betty nodded and looked off into the ocean. What Trish said was starting to make sense to her. Betty never felt like she belonged and what if she didn't. Was it possible that maybe she was a daywalker too and she was switched at birth. Betty tried not to ponder too loudly in her head just in case anyone was listening. Instead she hummed in her head while sorting out her thoughts in the sand.

TO BE CONTINUED:

Posted 7/23/2008

All my life I thought I knew the answers, I thought I had life figured out. Then love ate away at me like cancer, rotting out my sense of right and ripping the answers away. I'm not miss know it all anymore and I can't tell the future. Now a days I just sit here with my black velvet bag and pull out one rotted piece of paper at a time.

Why is it over? Why did you have to leave me?Why don't I deserve to be loved? Why did you let it die? Why is there no hope? Why do you stay silent? Why do you look at me in disgust? Why don't you love me anymore? Why couldn't you place me first? Why them instead of me? Why was I your punching bag? Why was I the one who had to bleed? Why did I always have to yield? Why did I always have to compromise? Why won't you answer me? Why am I even asking?

You don't even have the answers but I do. I found it hidden in this bag. It's funny there's only one simple answer to all these rotting questions. Guess you'd like to know..........

Betty ran upstairs to her room after dinner to get her beach toys. When she was done she ran downstairs into her daddy's arms. He scooped her up and took her out to the car and strapped her in. Her dad slid into the driver's seat and started up the car as her mom locked up and got in.

"Ok let's get Trish. I spoke with Tim and Fay, they said she's ready and are grateful to us for taking her."

"Oh so they're well enough to speak! Good that means Trish has seen them!" Betty squealed. Betty was singing to herself when they pulled up in front of Trish's and honked the horn. After a few moments Trish came hopping out of her home and into the car. The two girls greeted each other with squeels of laughter which were cut short by a sharp gasp. Betty looked up to see a bunch of young men standing about half a mile down the road.

"Maybe you should go the other way." Betty's mom cautioned her eyes filled with fear.

"If I did that they would think it's fine for them to come into this part of town when they know the rules." Betty's dad growled his eyes glowing red. Betty looked away from her dad and back at the young men down the road. They had light hair with dark eyes and skin. The people in Betty's town all had dark hair with light eyes and skin. She marveled at the beauty of them.

Betty's dad stepped on the gas and raced down the hill toward the group of guys.

"Jack what are you doing?"

"I got it covered Kate."

"Jack we have the girls in the car."

"It'll be fine Kate trust me."

"No Jack, I won't let you endanger my family." Betty's mom said before her eyes lit up like balls of fire. Betty's dad eased his foot off of the gas and turned at the next corner leaving the guys still standing at the bottom of the hill.

Betty's mom kept her hold on her husband until they reached the beach safely. Once the car was parked and the engine was shut off, her eyes returned to normal.

"I can't believe you did that to me. It's against the rules."

"I know Jack and I'm sorry but you were about to break an even more important rule."

TO BE CONTINUED:

Posted 7/16/08

Betty squealed as she kissed her Dad's cheek.

"Good evening my little princess. You look especially delicious tonight." Her father said before biting her playfully on the arms and neck. The two roared with laughter.

"Enough you two. Sit down and eat. We got to pick up Trish on our way to the beach. Her parents are sick and can't make it.

"See they never should've gone over to the su..." Betty's dad was cut off by his wife.

"The Summit sweetie, that's where they went, it's very breezy there and that could make anyone sick." Betty's dad smiled awkwardly before returning to his food. His wife glared at him momentarily.

"Awww so can I pick flowers from the back yard and give it to Trish's parents? It should make them feel better."

"Honey I'm sure they would love that but they are very sick right now and should be left alone to rest. I don't even think Trish has gone near them." Betty's dad said biting his lip to stop himself from saying anything else. Betty raised an eyebrow in shock and nodded. She went quietly back to dinner as her parents exchanged nervous glances before going back to theirs.

TO BE CONTINUED:

Posted: 7/15/08
